How to immigrate to Australia from India as Skilled Workers?

Australia is one of the most popular destinations for skilled workers around the globe. The best pathway to immigrate to Australia as a skilled worker is through the General Skilled Migration program.

This GSM (General Skilled Migration) program is designed to cater to the needs of those individuals who are highly skilled and are willing to move to Australia as a permanent resident.

As per the rules and regulations of the Australian government, all the skilled professionals or workers must possess the required skills, expertise, experience and qualification to live and work in Australia. They must undergo a Skill Select program, which is a two-step process.

Firstly, they have to submit an Expression of Interest and then their visa application. Their application for the preferred skilled visas in reviewed and scored as per the Skill Select guidelines.

There are 5 visa categories under this points-based GSM (Skillselect) program, which includes:

  • Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa Subclass 491
  • Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190
  • Temporary Business Long Stay Work Visa Subclass 457
  • Employer Nomination Scheme Visa

Among all five categories, three of them are the most popular ones, which are explained below:

    • Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189

This visa designed for those immigrants who wish to live and work in Australia permanently. In order to qualify for this visa category, you must score minimum least 65 in SkillSelect points table, age 45 or less and have required skill in an occupation that is mentioned in the SOL (skilled occupation listof Australia. But, under this visa category, it is not required for you to have an Australian sponsor to qualify.

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa Subclass 491

This one is a newly introduced regional provisional visa, which has replaced Skilled Regional sponsored visa - subclass 489 since 16th November 2019. Under this visa category, a candidate must have a state or territory government nomination or sponsorship from a relative living in a designated regional area of Australia. Though it's a 5-year long provisional visa, you can transition it into Australia PR Visaafter spending 3 years in Australia through Visa Subclass 191 (to come into effect from November 2022).

  • Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190

This visa subclass is also a permanent visa type and requires all the applicants to score a minimum of 65 to become eligible to apply for this visa. Also, skill test completion and nomination by a state or territorial government are mandatory for this visa category. If your qualifications, experience, and skills in any occupation that is listed on the Lists of Visa Nomination Occupations, then you are eligible for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190).
